“A Wind in Time” pays homage to the composer’s love of works for wind band based on folk music. The main folk-like theme undergoes various moods as it progresses through time. It beings as a slow and mysterious ballad with harmonies medieval in origin. As the music continues, the theme transforms in to something more dramatic, almost like a call to battle. After the dust settles, there is a slight shift in the atmosphere as musical echos of Ralph Vaughan Williams emerge during a short dance-like variation. Despite most of the music being in a minor key, there is a feeling of uplifting optimism that is captivating for both the musician and the audience. “A Wind in Time” is a winner of the 2021 Grand Mesa Music Publishers Composition and Arranging Contest.
