“Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you.”
-Carl Sandburg
What is this precious gift called time? And how are we called to use it? Fountain of Time, the Lorado Taft sculpture in Chicago, reminds us that though we are only seeing the present at hand, that we are all caught in a tidal wave of how the mysterious building blocks of life come together for a fruitful purpose.
The work for concert band, Fountain of Time, shows us that we are all connected from an antiphonal warm brass that echoes off of a peaceful and patient woodwind experience, to a percolating percussion always reminding us that despite our efforts to stay in the moment… The clock ticks on.
Lendt captures the chaos and order that is time by letting the ensemble play to themes of righteous caricature, stuck in the past, but praying for a prosperous and definitive future.
